Abhaya Dana

Cattle Release Project

Giving the precious gift of life and fearlessness on the sacred day of Poson.

Compassion in Action

Saving Lives on Poson Poya

Every year, on the sacred Poson Full Moon Poya Day, the Colombo YMBA conducts a special program to release cattle destined for slaughter. This act of Abhaya Dana (giving freedom from fear) is one of the most meritorious acts in Buddhism, reflecting the supreme virtue of compassion (Metta).

By intervening to save these innocent lives, the Association not only upholds Buddhist values but also sets an example of kindness to the community. The rescued animals are not merely released but are handed over to farming families or temples who pledge to care for them for the rest of their natural lives.

"All tremble at violence; all fear death. Putting oneself in the place of another, one should not kill nor cause another to kill."

— The Dhammapada

A Year-Round Effort

Funds collected daily, lives saved annually.

How the Project Works

A transparent process ensuring the welfare of the animals.

1. Fundraising

Funds are generated throughout the year from members, well-wishers, and the general public specifically for this cause.

2. The Rescue

On Poson Poya, the Association identifies cattle destined for slaughter and purchases them using the collected funds.

3. Re-homing

Animals are donated to low-income farming families or temples with a strict agreement that they will be cared for and never slaughtered.
