Mastering the art of public speaking through Sir Edwin Arnold’s timeless classic.

The Objective

Encouraging Eloquence & Dhamma

The annual "Light of Asia" contest is a flagship event conducted by the Colombo Y.M.B.A. It is designed to encourage youth to learn the art of public speaking, acquire proficiency in the English language, and appreciate the teachings of the Buddha as presented in Sir Edwin Arnold’s literary masterpiece.

Candidates will not only recite passages but will also be questioned by the judges. They must be prepared to explain the meaning of their recited passage in two to three minutes, demonstrating their understanding of the text.

Event Schedule

Held annually during the months of May, June & July.

Judging Criteria

Accuracy of Text

Faithfulness to Sir Edwin Arnold’s original verses.

Pronunciation & Audibility

Clarity of voice and correct articulation.

Expression

Vocal modulation and appropriate facial expressions.

Understanding

Depth of comprehension of the recited passage.
