Our Mission

A Home for the Future

The Lakshmi Home for Boys, standing on a lush two-acre block in Walana, Katunayake, is fully funded and maintained by the Colombo YMBA. It accommodates up to 40 destitute boys under the age of 16.

Originally started by the Lakshmi Niwasa Buddhist Society, the home was handed over to the YMBA to ensure its continuity. Registered under the Department of Child Care and Probation, we provide not just food and shelter, but a holistic environment for spiritual and academic growth.

Education First

Life at the Center

We focus on the complete development of the child.

Education

Younger children attend Lakshmi Junior School (adjoining) while others attend Hinatiyana Maha Vidyalaya. We provide extra tuition classes funded by the Association and donors like Mr. Anil de Silva.

Spiritual Growth

Children grow up in a Buddhist atmosphere. Daily religious observances and Atasil on Full Moon Poya days are conducted at the adjoining Sri Sumanaramaya temple.

Recreation

Facilities for sports and spare time activities are provided. Children also enjoy annual educational tours and pilgrimages supported by the Katunayake Free Trade Zone Welfare Association.

A Path Forward

Upon reaching 16 years and completing O/Levels, children are either reintegrated with parents or admitted to the Vocational Training Institute, Divulapitiya (a YMBA venture) to learn a trade and secure their future.

How You Can Help

The cost of maintaining the home is rising. We welcome donations of cooked meals, dry rations, or cash contributions. The Colombo YMBA is an Approved Charity, meaning all donations are tax-exempt.
